Challenge story:

A brave bunch of local ladies, including local MP Tracey Crouch CBE and our very own Deepika Akolekar, Consultant Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon, are all set to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this summer in aid of our charity.

Tracey Crouch CBE MP has had breast cancer herself and received treatment from our team. Tracey knows full well about the benefits of a quick diagnosis. Following a conversation with her oncologist, she became aware that Breast Cancer Kent were urgently trying to raise £100,000 to purchase state of the art life saving equipment, which will help the pathology team quickly process biopsies (and tissue removed during surgery). Maidstone Hospital provides pathology services to a large part of Kent and at the moment they are reliant on using imaging machines in other departments. This is significantly slowing down how fast they can process the tissue, which means patients are waiting longer for their results. The Faxitron path specimen radiography system is quick and convenient as it can be placed in the laboratory.

As time is of the essence, this will help save lives.

The team of seven ladies have been in training to climb Mount Kilimanjaro which is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain above sea level in the world at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) above sea level. The ladies have covered the costs of the trip, so all money raised will go directly to our charity.

Fundraising efforts so far have totalled £133,756.62, which is amazing. This included a ball in aid of the charity at Tonbridge School in June.

We wish the ladies the very best of luck in this amazing endeavour. You can follow their progress and make a donation on the following link: https://ww2.emma-live.com/MountKilimanjaroClimb/?home_page
